Qualifier Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil extended his winning streak to four matches by reaching the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Tire Championships held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, United States. The 32-year-old defeated Russian veteran Teymuraz Gabashvili in the second round 6-3, 7-6(7) on Thursday, a day when all matches were moved indoors due to rain.
Bellucci sent down four aces and won 79 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in two hours and nine minutes. The World No. 297, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 21 in July 2010, will next take on Prajnesh Gunneswaran of India. The No. 4 seed battled past US-American Jack Sock 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-6(5) after almost three hours of play.

Later in the day, Mikael Torpegaard of Denmark, one of the most decorated tennis players in Ohio State University’s history, knocked out the tournament’s top seed Thiago Monteiro of Brazil 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 26-year-old five-time All-American won 53 per cent of the total points played to outpoint his rival 87-76 after one hour and 59 minutes. Up next for Torpegaard will be US-American Brandon Nakashima. The 19-year-old from California eased past Canadian wild card entry Alexis Galarneau 6-3, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 16 minutes.
