Marterer Masters Machac To Win Slovak Open Title

Maximilian Marterer has clinched his seventh ATP Challenger career title by lifting the trophy of the € 44,820 Peugeot Slovak Open held on indoor hard court of the National Tennis Centre in Bratislava, Slovakia. The 25-year-old lefty from Germany fought past Czech qualifier Tomas Machac 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5 in Sunday’s singles final.

Marterer didn’t drop a set en route to the championship match, beating German qualifier Julian Lenz, Blaz Rola of Slovenia, Sergiy Stakhovsky from the Ukraine (walkover) and Frenchman Antoine Hoang. The World No. 242 from Nuremberg fired 15 aces in the final and won 78 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 26 minutes.

Marterer, who only lost one service game the entire week, has claimed his first title since 2018 Cherbourg,France and took away from the capital city of Slovakia €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

On Saturday, the Finnish duo of Harri Heliovaara and Emil Ruusuvuori captured their second team title. The pair defeated in the doubles final the all-Slovakian combination of Lukas Klein and Alex Molcan 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted 55 minutes. Heliovaara and Ruusuvuori split €2,670 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Ranking points.
