STARNBERG, November 20, 2020
The $52,080 Orlando Open Presented by Nemours, a USTA Pro Circuit ATP Challenger 80 event, continued Thursday at the USTA National Campus.
A banner day for Americans playing on home soil saw US-players advancing in all four singles matches. The most notable result of the day was 19-year-old Brandon Nakashima knocking off No. 1 seed Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, 6-4, 6-3. The teenager, coached by former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, struck eight aces, saved all four break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own six break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 45 minutes.
Nakashima will next take on No. 8 seed Mackenzie McDonald. The 25-year-old US-American punched his ticket to the quarterfinals, dispatching Sweden’s Elias Ymer 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 32 minutes.
Mitchell Krueger and qualifier Alexander Ritschard both prevailed in all-US-American second round showdowns, defeating Bjorn Fratangelo and Nick Chappell, respectively.
Krueger rounded out the successful day for the home favourites as he and partner Jackson Withrow advanced to the doubles semifinals.
Play continues Friday with the singles quarterfinals and the singles semifinals.
