Top seed Thiago Monteiro opened his home campaign at the Sao Paulo Open Tennis, hosted by the Clube Hipico Santo Amaro, with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Portuguese wild card entry Gastao Elias on Tuesday. The World No. 84 from Fortaleza, Brazil, capitalized on four of his eight break-point chances to advance to the second round of the $52,080 ATP Challenger clay-court event after one hour and 19 minutes.

“It was an excellent debut, I adapted well to the conditions, I like to play here in Sao Paulo. The club received us very well, the tournament is organized very well. I felt good right from the beginning of the match and I am happy that I won it. This is my last tournament of the season and I am 100 per cent focused here,” analyzed Monteiro, who will next take on Frenchman Maxime Janvier.

In other action, Orlando Luz knocked out No. 2 seed Thiago Seyboth Wild in an-all Brazilian affair, winning 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. The World No. 315 won one point less than his opponent but secured victory in two hours and 17 minutes.

“The key to success was consistency throughout the match. I played very well from the beginning to the end. I am happy with this win, now I have to prepare for the next match,” said Luz, who will face 19-year-old Brazilian qualifier Matheus Pucinelli De Almeida in the second round. The teenager fought past Kaichi Uchida of Japan 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 11 minutes.

“He was a good junior, he plays well, coming from three good matches in this tournament. I will be 100 per cent focused and do my best,” Luz said of his upcoming task.

The tournament, originally scheduled to be held at Florianopolis, continues on Wednesday with free admission to the public. However, access is restricted to 200 spectators due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in accordance with all health and safety protocols of the ATP.
