The top half of the draw at the Sao Paulo Open Tennis was in second-round action on Wednesday headlined by Maxime Janvier, who knocked out Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, top seed of $52,080 ATP Challenger clay-court event. The World No. 211 from France broke Monteiro’s serve three times to secure a 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-4 victory in two hours and 51 minutes.
Janvier, who captured his last title at the 2016 Casablanca Challenger in Morocco beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final, will next challenge Pedro Sakamoto of Brazil, who defeated No. 8 seed Juan Pablo Ficovich from Argentina 7-6(4), 7-5 in two hours and 20 minutes.
No. 3 seed Mohamed Safwat of Egypt also fell in the second round. The World No. 155 from Cairo lost 6-3, 7-6(7) to Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves. The 22-year-old Campinas native won 52 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 44 minutes.
“It was a very good match, a good victory over an experienced player. Unlike yesterday, it was match that gave me more rhythm, I felt really good on the court. I was happy with my performance, a good intensity from the beginning to the end. I enjoyed playing in front my home crowd, it is always great to play in Brazil,” said Meligeni.
Up next for Meligeni will be Dmitry Popko. The No. 5 seed from Kazakhstan eased past Roberto Quiroz from Ecuador 6-1, 6-1 in 64 minutes.
