Brazilian teenager Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida advanced to his first quarterfinal on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 19-year-old qualifier fought past compatriot Orlando Luz 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the stage of the final eight of the $52,080 Sao Paulo Open Tennis held at the Clube Hipico Santo Amaro.
Pucinelli de Almeida, winner of the 2019 French Open Boys’ Doubles title alongside Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante, won three points more than his opponent to secure victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
“It was a very close match against Luz, but I had a good time. He knew how to handle pressure well. In the third set, I felt tired, but I reacted and stayed calm,” analyzed Pucinelli.
The World No. 936 will next take on No. 7 seed Joao Menezes of Brazil, who defeated Chung-hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 32 minutes.
“I adapted well to the conditions here. I played tough and important matches. I don’t know Menezes very much, but I hope to recover physically and will play a good match,” said Pucinelli.
Qualifier Camilo Ugo Carabelli continued his good run of form in Sao Paulo with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Christian Lindell of Sweden. The 21-year-old Argentine won 71 per cent of his first-service points and broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail after one hour and 27 minutes.
Ugo Carabelli will next face No. 6 seed Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal, who eased past Brazilian veteran Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-1. The encounter lasted one hour and 32 minutes.
