Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil, who lifted his maiden trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour on home soil at the Sao Paulo Open Tennis last Sunday, continued his fine run of form by reaching the second round of the 10th edition of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis in Campinas.
Brazil’s No. 4 defeated Spanish qualifier Carlos Gomez-Herrera 6-4, 7-6(3) on Tuesday afternoon on Quadra Joao Lima at the the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas. Meligeni Alves capitalized on five of his 13 break-point chances to secure victory in just under two hours of play.
“It was a difficult debut. I managed to maintain my level of play and I did well in the important moments to leave the court as the winner,” Meligeni Alves said. “When you win a tournament, usually the first round is always very complicated, having a little more pressure. Playing at home is also special and you are a bit nervous, but I think I played well. I was feeling a little tired, which is normal, there were many matches in the past week.”
The World No. 242 from Campinas will next take on No. 5 seed Emilio Gomez of Ecuador.
Carballes Baena, Elahi Galan advance
Roberto Carballes Baena, top seed of the $52,080 clay-court event, opened his title bid with a comfortable 6-4, 6-0 victory over fellow Spaniard Roberto Ortega-Olmedo. The 27-year-old Tenerife native won 77 per cent of his first-service points and 63 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and nine minutes. Carballes Baena will face Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic.
Daniel Elahi Galan, who clinched his second ATP Challenger career title in Lima, Peru, last Sunday, began his new campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jelle Sels from the Netherlands. The No. 4 seed from Colombia outpointed his rival 65-45 after one hour and 12 minutes. Elahi Galan will next play Argentine qualifier Sebastian Baez.
