Top seed Roberto Carballes Baena advanced to the quarterfinals  of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis in Campinas. The World No. 102 from Spain rallied past Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday.

Carballes Baena sent down four aces and won 77 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 45 minutes. Up next for the Tenerife native will be Mohamed Safwat. The No. 5 seed from Egypt also came back from a set down to overcome Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and one minute.

In-form Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil, who lifted his maiden trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour on home soil at the Sao Paulo Open Tennis last Sunday knocked out No. 6 seed Emilio Gomez from Ecuador 6-4, 6-4. The 22-year-old local favourite converted three of his eight break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 30 minutes.

“Everything is going well.” That’s how Meligeni described his current stage on the international tennis circuit. “I evolved a lot mentally. The physique is also very good, but even though I feel a little tired, I am able to handle it well, which is what it cost me the most in the past,” the World No. 242 explained.

Meligeni will try to keep up his great level of form in the quarterfinals against Alejandro Tabilo. The 22-year-old from Chile received a walkover from Brazilian Orlando Luz.
