QUIMPER, January 25, 2021

The ATP Challenger Tour has returned to France for a three-week indoor swing beginning with the 11th edition of the Open Quimper Bretagne Occidentale. Main draw action of the € 88,520 hard-court event kicked off on Monday at the Parc des Expositions de Quimper.

In-form Frenchman Evan Furness, who started the 2021 season by reaching back-to-back finals at the Rafa Nadal Academy and winning his seventh career title on the ITF Pro Circuit in Manacor, Mallorca, opened his home campaign with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory over Italian Roberto Marcora.

Wild card entry Furness didn’t face a break point and capitalized on four of his own 10 break-point chances to advance to the second round after 66 minutes. The 22-year-old from Pontivy will next take on either No. 6 seed Jurij Rodionov of Austria or his compatriot Enzo Couacaud.

No. 3 seed and 2019 Quimper champion Gregoire Barrere began his title bid with a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston. The World No. 111 from Boulogne-Billancourt sent down seven aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after exactly one hour of play. Barrere will next face the winner of the encounter between 18-year-old local wild card entry Arthur Cazaux and Illya Marchenko from the Ukraine.

Quimper top seed Lucas Pouille

The top two seeds of the ATP Challenger 100 tournament are former World No. 10 Lucas Pouille of France, who will compete in his first tournament since undergoing right elbow surgery last year, and 20-year-old US-American Sebastian Korda. Pouille will play against Slovakia’s Filip Horansky with last week’s Istanbul Indoor Challenger champion Arthur Rinderknech a potential quarterfinal opponent.

In the bottom half of the draw, Korda, runner-up at the ATP 250 Delray Beach Open earlier this month, will start against French qualifier Tristan Lamasine.
