DURBAN, January 30, 2021 (TSA Press Release)

South African rising star, Luc Koenig makes it two titles in two weeks at the same venue in Durban after defeating top seed Devin Badenhorst in three sets on Friday.

For the second time in eight days, Koenig is the champion at the Westridge Park Tennis Stadium. The second-seeded won the Curro Junior ITF I Grade 5 event last week, and this week inside the same venue he won the Curro Junior ITF II.

This time, though, Koenig’s final opponent was top seed Devin Badenhorst instead of Alexander Edley. The 17-year-old Koenig who did not drop a set enroute to the final was forced to dig deep against Badenhorst, eventually wrapping up a 7-6(8) 3-6 6-4 victory in two hours and 35 minutes.

“It’s obviously great to win both titles back-to-back. It’s a good feeling and I couldn’t be happier with myself. I am in a great place right now”, commented Koenig following his match.

In the girls’ event, seven days after suffering a defeat to doubles partner Heike van Vuuren, top seed Leigh van Zyl turned the tables on the second seed to win their rematch on Friday in the finals of the Junior ITF Grade 5 event.

Van Zyl exacted revenge on Van Vuuren who denied her a title last week in an emphatic fashion at the same venue.

The 16-year-old Van Zyl staged a master-class performance to edge out the second seed with an impressive 7-5 6-2 victory to lift the title.

Later on, the two joined forces to win the doubles title against Aneta Junova of Czech Republic and Gabriella Lindgren from Canada 6-3 6-7(5) [10-7].
