GRAN CANARIA, February 25, 2021

Qualifier Alex Molcan upset Italian top seed Lorenzo Musetti in Thursday’s second round of the Gran Canaria Challenger I, hosted by the Tennis Academy El Cortijo in Telde, Gran Canaria. The World No. 296 from Slovakia outpointed his opponent 100-96 after two hours and five minutes.

“I am really happy. Lorenzo is a very good player, almost Top 100. Today I was a break down in the first set but I managed to survive and fought until the end,” said Molcan, who defeated German wild card entry Mark Owen Endler in the first round of the main draw.

“I want to win every match I play. Winning a tournament is always the best but I just focus on the next round.”

Molcan will next take on No. 8 seed and compatriot Filip Horansky, who edged past Gian Marco Moroni 7-6(3), 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, Andrea Pellegrino knocked the last Spaniard in the singles draw of the tournament, winning 6-4, 7-5 over Roberto Ortega-Olmedo. The 23-year-old Italian converted five of his 11 break-point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 41 minutes.

Up next for Pellegrino will be No. 4 seed Nikola Milojevic from Serbia, who eased past Frenchman Constant Lestienne 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes.
