POREC, March 13, 2021
Austrian teenager Filip Misolic and Pietro Rondoni of Italy will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Istarska Rivijera held at the Tennis Centar Pical in Porec, Croatia.
Misolic came back from a set down to fight past No. 5 seed Alex Rybakov from the United States, the highest ranked player left in the singles draw of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 clay-court event. On a chilly Saturday morning in Istria, the 19-year-old wild card entry capitalized on four of his seven break-point chances to secure a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in one hour and 50 minutes.
Misolic advanced to his second championship match on the Pro Circuit after he finished runner-up to Danish young gun Holger Rune in December last year in Antalya, Turkey. Back then, the current World No. 954 battled his way from the qualifying into the final but was forced to retire in the second set, trailing 6-0, 4-0.
Rondoni in straight sets
Later in the day, Rondoni edged past Swiss qualifier Damien Wenger 6-4, 7-5 on Court 2. The 27-year-old broke Wenger’s serve six times and outpointed his rival 75-66 after two hours and seven minutes.
Rondoni is seeking his sixth title on the ITF World Tennis Tour, his first since his triumph on home soil at the 21st Torneo B. Camparini-Camparini Gioielli Cup. Misolic and Rondoni will meet for the first time.
Italians lift doubles trophies
In other action, Marco Bortolotti and Giovanni Fonio captured their first team title. The No. 2 seeds from Italy defeated the all-Hungarian combination of Gergely Madarasz and Peter Nagy 6-2, 6-2. The doubles final lasted 58 minutes.
