Giovanni Fonio is the champion of the 49th Istarska Rivijera in Opatija, the third and final stop of a three-week clay-court swing in Istria, Croatia’s oldest tennis tournament series.

The No. 7 seed of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event emerged victorious from an all-Italian singles final with qualifier Giacomo Dambrosi, 6-2, 6-3 at the Opatija Tennis Club on a cloudy Sunday morning.

Fonio battled through the bottom half of the draw beating Juan Baptista Otegui of Argentina, compatriots Matteo Arnaldi and Pietro Rondoni, as well as Ukrainian qualifier Oleksandr Ovcharenko en-route to the championship match. Nineteen-year-old Dambrosi appeared in first final on the Pro Circuit.

In the pair’s first meeting, Fonio broke Dambrosi’s serve five times and won 17 point more than his opponent to secure victory in one hour and 33 minutes.

The World No. 512 captured his third career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour following two triumphs in Antalya, Turkey in 2020 and earlier this year.

Fonio is expected to climb to a new career-high of World No. 473 when the new ATP Rankings will be released.
