Mager Books Quarterfinals Berth At Marbella Challenger

Three Italians headlined second-round action in the top half of the draw at the AnyTech365 Andalucia Open. No. 4 seed Gianluca Mager booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger 80 tournament held at the Club de Tenis Puente Romano in Marbella, Spain, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Swedish alternate Elias Ymer on Wednesday.

Mager capitalized on four of his 11 break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 32 minutes. Up next for the World No. 102 from Sanremo will be compatriot Roberto Marcora. The 31-year-old Italian defeated Latvian veteran Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 7-5 after two hours and five minutes.

In other action, Alessandro Giannessi edged out fifth seed Pedro Sousa of Portugal 6-4, 6-3. The 30-year-old from Italy won 54 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 12 minutes. Giannessi will next face Martin Klizan of Slovakia. The World No. 161 from Bratislava beat Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland, who celebrated his 29th birthday and had knocked out top seed Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in the opening round, 6-3, 6-3. The encounter lasted 71 minutes.

The bottom half of the draw will compete on Thursday led by No. 3 seeded Spaniard Jaume Munar. It will be the first day of the tournament at the the Costa del Sol with spectators attending the matches.
