SALINAS, April 27, 2021

Nicolas Jarry of Chile is the champion of the Challenger de Salinas I held on the hard courts of the Salinas Golf & Tennis Club in Salinas, Ecuador. The 25-year-old wild card entry defeated Colombian qualifier Nicolas Mejia 7-6(7) 6-1 in the title match.

Due to government restrictions and a weekend curfew order in Ecuador, the singles semi-finals and final of the $52,080 ATP Challenger Tour event could not take place as scheduled and the tournament concluded on a rain-interrupted Monday.

Jarry did not drop a set all week, celebrating straight set wins over Nicolas Alvarez from Peru, Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan as well as Argentines Thiago Agustin Tirante and Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The World No. 370 fired 16 aces in the championship match and won 80 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

“I am very happy to win the title here. I fought a lot, I won important points and now I will be closer to where I ever was,” said Jarry, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 38 in July 2019.

By lifting his fourth Challenger trophy and winning his first title since the ATP 250 event in Bastad, Sweden 2019, Jarry collected $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

First team title for Reyes-Varela/Romboli

On Friday, Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela of Mexico and Brazilian Fernando Romboli captured the doubles title. The top seeds fought past Diego Hidalgo from Ecuador and Skander Mansouri from Tunisia 7-5, 4-6, 10-2. The final lasted one hour and 32 minutes.

By winning their first team title, Reyes-Varela and Romboli split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
