Only 16-year-old Denis Shapovalov captures his first ITF Pro Circuit title, winning the $10,000 Midtown Athletic Club Westen Futures on Sunday.
The leftie, who was born in Tel Aviv, defeated Pedro Sakamoto from Brazil in the final, winning 7-6, 6-3. Shapovalov fired eight aces on the green clay and capitalized on four of his seven break points to seal victory in 71 minutes. The teenager played his third tournament of the season, battled through the qualification and lifted the trophy in Florida without dropping a set in nine matches.
Shapovalov, ranked world number 1132, takes away $1,440 in prize money as well as 18 ATP ranking points.
US-American wild cards Junior Alexander Ore and Hunter Reese took the doubles title, winning 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 over third seeds Isak Arvidsson and Kaichi Uchida in one hour and 28 minutes.
