After hosting four ATP Challenger tournaments indoors in February and March this year, the northern Italian city of Biella, situated in the region of Piedmont, welcomed players this week for the Thindown Challenger Biella 5 Outdoor.
Juan Pablo Varillas was crowned champion of the €44,80 tournament held on the clay courts of the Tennis Comunale in Biella. The No. 7 seed from Peru defeated Argentine qualifier Guido Andreozzi 6-3, 6-1 in Saturday’s singles final.
Varillas battled his way through the top half of the draw with wins over Italian Alessandro Giannessi, Dimitar Kuzmanov from Bulgaria, Joao Menezes of Brazil and Frenchman Alexandre Muller.
The 25-year-old Lima native sent down four aces in the championship match and won 77 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 28 minutes.
By lifting his third ATP Challenger career trophy, his first since Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 2019, World No. 150 Varillas pocketed in Biella €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

Goransson/Lammons take doubles title
Earlier in the day, Andre Goransson of Sweden and Nathaniel Lammons from the United States clinched the doubles title. The top seeds fought past the all-Brazilian tandem of Rafael Matos and Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves 7-6(3), 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 20 minutes.
