Nikles Notches ITF Majadahonda Title

Johan Nikles lifted his fourth career trophy on the Pro Circuit by winning the VIII Torneo Internacional de Majadahonda held at the at the venue of the Club Internacional de Tenis in Majadahonda, Madrid. Following his triumph in Sabadell 2019, it marked his second title win on Spanish soil.

The 24-year-old Swiss upset top seed Nuno Borges of Portugal 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final of the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 clay-court event.

Nikles defeated French qualifier Luca Van Assche as well as Spaniards Pol Marti Tiffon, Pedro Vives Marco and No. 3 seed Oriol Roca Batalla en-route to the championship match.

The World No. 507 converted four of his 12 break-point chances against Borges to secure victory in one hour and 32 minutes.

Nikles said that “getting a title is always very difficult, and even more in these times, as there are fewer tournaments and the level has risen a lot.” The Geneva native, who practices at the Ferrer Tennis Academy in Valencia added: “These matches are very complicated, that’s why winning a title is a very special moment.”

Ignacio Navas, President of the Club Internacional de Tenis in Majadahonda, appreciated the “high level of tennis that we have experienced throughout the week. It has been a very good level, both physically and technically.We are very happy to organize these ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments.”
