OEIRAS, May 21, 2021
The 32-man-draw has been whittled down to the final four at the ATP Challenger 125 Oeiras Open, the biggest tournament held in Portugal right after the Millennium Estoril Open. The clay-court tournament is taking place at the Complexo Desportivo Nacional do Jamor in Oeiras.
Facundo Bagnis is the only seeded player left in the singles draw. The seventh favourite from Argentina fought past local wild card entry Nuno Borges 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 on Thursday afternoon. The World No. 109 converted six of his 12 break-point chances to prevail after two hours and 25 minutes.
“He really took advantage of all the opportunities he had,” said Borges. “I was a break up in the third and in the end I made more mistakes because I also ran a bit out of steam.”
Bagnis will take on Hugo Gaston in the semi-finals. The 20-year-old Frenchman eliminated No. 8 seed Pedro Sousa from Portugal 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 after one hour and 30 minutes.
In the top half of the draw, Spanish young gun Carlos Alcaraz defeated home favourite and wild card entry Gastao Elias 7-5, 6-4. The 18-year-old Murcia native, who is competing in his first ATP Challenger event since Gran Canaria in early March, outpointed his rival 66-52 after one hour and 28 minutes.
Alcaraz will next take on Taro Daniel of Japan. The 28-year-old Japanese battled past Hugo Dellien of Bolivia 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Daniel converted five of his 13 break-point opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 54 minutes.
