BASTAD, July 15, 2021

The bottom half of the draw at the Nordea Open was in second-round action on a sunny Wednesday in Bastad led by No. 2 seed Cristian Garin. The World No. 18 from Chile moved past Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 clay-court event in Sweden.

Garin struck five aces and won 75 per cent of his first-service points to advance after one hour and 36 minutes.

“I didn’t expect to play well, as I didn’t practice too much after Wimbledon,” Garin said in an on-court interview. “I come back almost every year. It is slower than in previous years. The weather is amazing and I am enjoying this week here. I like the conditions. You have to play almost every point. I like that.”

Up next for Garin will be Federico Coria of Argentina, who finished runner-up to his compatriot Facundo Bagnis at last week’s inaugural Salzburg Open ATP Challenger in Austria. Coria rallied from a set down to overcome Marco Cecchinato of Italy 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and eight minutes.

Arthur Rinderknech caused the upset of the day by knocking out No. 4 seed John Millman of Australia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The French qualifier fired 12 aces and won 11 points more than his opponent to reach his third quarterfinal of the season. Rinderknech, ranked World No. 105, also reached the last eight on home soil at the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon and the Open 13 Provence in Marseille.

Yannick Hanfmann defeated seventh seed Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3 in 83 minutes. The 25-year-old German, who enjoyed a run to the quarterfinals at the Sardegna Open in Cagliari in April, has now matched his best performance of the year.
