EL ESPINAR/SEGOVIA, July 28, 2021

Benjamin Bonzi of France booked his spot in the quarterfinal of the Open Castilla y Leon Villa de El Espinar. The No. 2 seed of the €66,640 ATP Challenger hard-court tournament, held in the province of Segovia, cruised past Italian Matteo Viola 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Bonzi struck six aces and won 70 per cent of his first-service points to advance after only 57 minutes. Up next for the World No. 111 will be Dalibor Svrcina. The 18-year-old Czech qualifier continued his fine run of form this week with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Argentine Renzo Olivo. World No. 517 Svrcina, who won the 2019 Australian Open boys’ doubles title with Jonas Forejtek, won five points less than his rival but secured victory in two hours and 15 minutes.

“I love it here, the crowd was amazing. They cheered me up,” Svrcina said. “I had a tough match against a great champion, a former Top 100 player and I am so happy to be in the quarterfinal here.”

Later in the afternoon, Mathias Bourgue beat 20-year-old Spanish wild card entry Alejandro Moro Canas, who clinched his maiden trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour by winning the Circuito Internacional de Tenis de Idanha-a-Nova II in Portugal last week. The No. 7 seed from France converted four of his five break-point chances to prevail 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 21 minutes.

Bourgue will next play Tim van Rijthoven. The 24-year-old from the Netherlands rallied past Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 after one hour and 55 minutes.
