Spotlight on the Open 13 in Marseille, as the second of five French tournaments on the ATP World Tour is led by world number four Stan Wawrinka, who is making his first appearance since reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open last month, and number eight Tomas Berdych, who reached the final in his last appearance in Marseille in 2013.
The strong field includes seven of the top 20 in the ATP rankings. The other seeds are: number three Richard Gasquet, number four Marin Cilic, number five and defending champion Gilles Simon, number six David Goffin, number seven and Rotterdam runner-up Gael Monfils as well as number eight Benoit Paire.
Two of the seeds were in action on Day 1 at the Palais des Sports when the tournament’s number six David Goffin defeated 19-year-old Korean Hyeon Chung 6-3, 6-1. The world number 17 from Belgium saved the only break point he faced, converting four of his own to prevail in 61 minutes.
Eighth seed Benoit Paire also made a winning start into the tournament. The 26-year-old Frenchman beat Simone Bolelli 6-4, 7-5 in the pair’s first tour meeting. Paire fired 11 aces and won 87% of his first service points to seal victory in one hour and 30 minutes.
Robin Haase cruised past Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-0 to clinch his first win at his fourth appearance in Marseille. The 28-year-old Dutchman saved the two break points he faced, converting four of his own to set a second round meeting with Marin Cilic after 63 minutes.
