Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain is the champion of the Poznan Open hosted by the Park Tenisowy Olimpia in Poznan, Poland. The top seed of the €66,640 clay-court event defeated Czech teenager Jiri Lehecka, who captured his maiden Challenger title in Tampere last week, 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday’s singles final.

Zapata Miralles advanced to the championship match with wins over Belgian Kimmer Coppejans, Mats Moraing from Germany, Alexandre Muller of France and No. 7 seed Dmitry Popko from Kazakhstan.

The World No. 244 won 82 per cent of his first-service points and converted four of his seven break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 11 minutes.

“I am very happy. I felt good during the match,” Zapata Miralles said. “Physically I feel fine after a tough match yesterday. Yesterday was a day to forget. But tennis is like this. Sometimes you don’t feel good and you win the match and the next day it’s totally different. It’s a good part of this sport.”

By lifting his third career trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour, his second of the season following his triumph at the Neckarcup in Heilbronn in May, the 24-year-old Spaniard pocketed €9,200 in prize money as well as 90 ATP Ranking points.

Kolar/Lehecka prevail in doubles

On Saturday, Zdenek Kolar and Jiri Lehecka took the doubles title. The all-Czech combination battled past Karol Drzewiecki from Poland and Australia’s Alexander Vukic 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. The final lasted one hour and 16 minutes.

Kolar and Lehecka split €3,950 in prize money and earned 90 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
