The quarterfinals of the Rhein Asset Open presented by B&B Hotels are set. Daniel Altmaier, top seed of the €44,820 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament hosted by the Teremeer Sport and Tennis Resort in Meerbusch, Germany, leads the way following a hard-fought second-round win over Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic on Thursday.

The World No. 124 from Germany struck nine aces and won 63 per cent of his first-service points to secure a 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 34 minutes. Altmaier, who clinched his maiden Challenger trophy on home soil at the Sparkassen Open in Braunschweig, Germany last month followed by back-to-back semi-final runs at the ATP 250 events in Umag, Croatia and Kitzbühel, Austria, will next take on Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera. The 23-year-old from Chile benefited from a walkover of Spaniard Nicola Kuhn due to medical reasons.

Mats Moraing also booked his spot in the stage of the final eight. The 29-year-old German defeated Argentine qualifier Nicolas Kicker 6-4, 6-2. Moraing won 62 per cent of his second-serve return points and capitalized on all of his four break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 21 minutes. The World No. 246 will next face Dutchman Robin Haase, who rallied past Moraing’s practice partner and good friend Oscar Otte of Germany 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 55 minutes.

Matches on Friday start at 11 am local time.
