Main draw matches at the inaugural Platzmann-Sauerland Open kicked off on a jam-packed Tuesday with all 32 players in first-round action. Mirza Basic caused the upset of the day by knocking out World No. 74 Pablo Andujar of Spain, top seed of the €44,820 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament in Lüdenscheid, Germany.

The 30-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina benefited from eight double faults and broke Andujar’s serve eight times to secure a 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 victory in two hours and 32 minutes.

Up next for 268th-ranked Basic, who captured the ATP Tour title at the 2018 Sofia Open and reached a career-high of World No. 74 the same year, will be Tristan Lamasine. The Frenchman beat Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia 6-3, 6-3 after 77 minutes.

No. 3 seed Roberto Carballes Baena set a second-round clash with Nicolas Jarry from Chile following a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Argentine Nicolas Kicker. The World No. 97 from Spain capitalized on four of his 15 break-point chances to prevail after two hours and 30 minutes. Former World No. 38 Jarry rallied from a set down to overcome Lukas Klein from Slovakia 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(6). The encounter lasted two hours and 37 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, the matches of No. 2 seed Pedro Martinez from Spain and fourth favourite Daniel Altmaier of Germany could not be finished due to bad weather. Martinez is trailing 2-6, 6-4, 3-4 against Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina. The winner will face French qualifier Matteo Martineau, who eased past local wild card entry Marvin Moeller 6-0, 6-2.

Altmaier leads 6-2, 4-1 over Argentine qualifier Genaro Alberto Olivieri and could next take on Julien Cagnina from Belgium, who defeated Germany’s Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-1.
