The top half of the draw at the Platzmann-Sauerland Open was in second-round action on Wednesday. Nicolas Jarry booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the €44,820 clay-court event in Lüdenscheid, Germany after he benefited from the retirement of No. 3 seed Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain.

The former World No. 38 of Chile was leading 5-1 in the opening set when Carballes Baena was forced to stop playing due to a back injury. Jarry will next take on Duje Ajdukovic from Croatia, who beat Frenchman Constant Lestienne 6-2, 6-4 after one hour and 25 minutes.

Mirza Basic, who knocked out top seed Pablo Andujar in the first round, continued his fine run of form with a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over Tristan Lamasine of France. The 30-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina sent down three aces and won 69 per cent of his first-service points to advance after one hour and 33 minutes. Basic will next play Germany’s Julian Lenz, who rallied from a set down to overcome No. 7 seed Roman Safiullin from Russia 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The encounter lasted two hours and seven minutes.
