In-form German Daniel Altmaier booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Platzmann-Sauerland Open. The No. 4 seed of the €44,820 ATP Challenger clay-court tournament in Lüdenscheid, Germany, defeated Belgian Julien Cagnina 7-6(1), 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.
Altmaier, who clinched his maiden Challenger trophy on home soil at the Sparkassen Open in Braunschweig, Germany last month followed by back-to-back semi-final runs at the ATP 250 events in Umag, Croatia and Kitzbühel, Austria, struck five aces and won 70 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 50 minutes. The World No. 122 from Kempen will next take on Spanish qualifier Javier Barranco Cosano, who received a walkover from Dutch veteran Robin Haase. Haase was forced to withdraw from the second-round match due to a hip injury.

In other action, Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina backed up his first-round win over No. 2 seed Pedro Martinez from Spain with a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over French qualifier Matteo Martineau. The World No. 305 converted three of his six break-point opportunities to advance after one hour and 50 minutes.
Up next for Carabelli will be his compatriot Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The sixth seed from Buenos Aires eased past fellow 19-year-old Romanian qualifier Filip Jianu 6-2, 6-2. Cerundolo won 57 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 29 minutes.
