Sauerland Open: Cerundolo Awaits Altmaier Or Barranco Cosano In Semis

Sauerland Open ATP Challenger Lüdenscheid

LÜDENSCHEID/STARNBERG, August 20, 2021

Germany’s Daniel Altmaier or Spanish qualifier Javier Barranco Cosano will complete the semi-finals line-up at the inaugural Platzmann-Sauerland Open. The No. 4 seed of the €44,820 ATP Challenger clay-court tournament in Lüdenscheid took the first set 6-4 on a rain-interrupted Friday in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Altmaier was also leading in the tie-break of the second set 3-1 but Barranco Cosano fought back and pushed the match the distance. However, due to darkness the encounter was suspended and the final set will be played on Saturday at noon local time.

The winner will next take on Argentine teenager Juan-Manuel Cerundolo. The No. 6 seed, champion of the Roma Garden Challenger as well as the Cordoba Open ATP Tour event earlier this season, battled past his compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Cerundolo won 55 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and three minutes.

In the top half of the draw, Nicolas Jarry continued his fine run of form with a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over Duje Ajdukovic of Croatia. The World No. 262 from Chile struck eight aces and won 81 per cent of his first-service points to advance after one hour and 36 minutes.

Jarry will play local favourite Julian Lenz in the stage of the final four. The 28-year-old German defeated Mirza Basic from Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-5, 7-5 after one hour and 54 minutes.
