Daniel Altmaier is the champion of the inaugural Platzmann-Sauerland Open. The No. 4 seed of the €44,820 ATP Challenger clay-court tournament in Lüdenscheid, Germany edged past Nicolas Jarry from Chile 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final.
Twenty-two-year-old Altmaier, who clinched his maiden Challenger trophy on home soil at the Sparkassen Open in Braunschweig, Germany last month followed by back-to-back semi-final runs at the ATP 250 events in Umag, Croatia and Kitzbühel, Austria, withstood six aces from the former World No. 38 and broke Jarry’s serve three times to secure victory in two hours and 15 minutes.
The World No. 122 from Germany earned €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points. Altmaier is projected to reach a new career-high ranking of World No. 106 on Monday.
“First of all, thanks to the tournament in Lüdenscheid,” Altmaier said. “It was a good week, although we didn’t have much luck with the weather. But the tournament finished on Sunday. I had a good week by winning the tournament and I wish the organizers all the best for the future. I will continue competing in Warsaw and Como the upcoming two weeks and will give my best again.”
