Local wild card entry Filip Misolic headlined Tuesday’s first-round action at the NÖ Open powered by EVN in Tulln, Austria by knocking out the tournament’s top seed and World No. 81 Marco Cecchinato from Italy.

In his first match on the ATP Challenger Tour, the World No. 539 claimed a 7-6(1), 2-6, 6-2 victory. Misolic, a winner of four singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season, converted four of his five break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 49 minutes.

“It was unbelievable how much energy the audience gave me, I’m not used to that yet,” Misolic said.

Up next for the 20-year-old from Graz, who resides in Zagreb, Croatia and is a big basketball fan of NBA team Utah Jazz, will be Czech youngster Jonas Forejtek. The 2019 US Open juniors champion defeated French qualifier Matteo Martineau 6-2, 7-6(4) in one hour and 54 minutes.

No. 2 seed Jiri Vesely opened his title bid at the €101,798 clay-court tournament with a 7-5, 7-6(8) win over Austrian wild card Lukas Neumayer. The World No. 90 from the Czech Republic struck six aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to advance after two hours and nine minutes. Up next for Vesely will be Geoffrey Blancaneaux from France.

Earlier in the day, Kamil Majchrzak from Poland rallied past Danish teen sensation Holger Rune 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The No. 4 seed from Poland fired seven aces and won 54 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 48 minutes. Majchrzak will next take on Czech young gun Jiri Lehecka.
