LIMA/STARNBERG, October 3, 2021
Two South Americans will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the $52,080 Dove Men & Care Legion Sudamericana Lima. Hugo Dellien of Bolivia will take on Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina for the title at the Centro Promotor de Tenis Miraflores in Lima, Peru.
Dellien rallied past Swiss qualifier Johan Nikles 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 in Saturday’s semi-finals. The No. 5 seed converted eight of his 10 break-point chances to seal a hard-fought victory in two hours and 56 minutes.
Earlier in the day, Ugo Carabellli ended the run of Austrian veteran Gerald Melzer. The No. 8 seed struck six aces, won 79 per cent of his first-service points and saved all five break points he faced to prevail after one hour and 35 minutes.
World No. 140 Dellien is bidding for his sixth career crown on the ATP Challenger Tour, his first since Milan, Italy in late June 2019. World No. 245 Carabelli could lift his second Challenger trophy following his maiden triumph in Warsaw, Poland in late August. The Argentine won the only previous meeting with Dellien in the opening round in Cordenons, Italy in August.
Lenz/Melzer take doubles trophies
In other action, Julian Lenz of Germany and Gerald Melzer captured the doubles title. The unseeded pair defeated second favourites Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia and Brazilian Fernando Romboli 7-6(4), 7-6(3) in one hour and 44 minutes.
Lenz and Melzer split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
