STARNBERG, October 8, 2021
World No. 76 Jordan Thompson leads the entry list of the 2021 Wolffkran Open, an €44,820 ATP Challenger Tour tournament played indoors on carpet at the Tennis Club Ismaning, Germany. The 27-year-old Australian will bid for his eighth Challenger career trophy, hoping to win his first title in three years.
Yet, Thompson will face strong competition by fellow Top-100 players Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic, who reached the semi-finals of the 2019 Wolffkran Open, and Italian veteran Andreas Seppi. The 37-year-old South Tyrolean is competing in his 20th season on the Pro Circuit and recently played his 65th consecutive Grand Slam main draw at this year’s US Open, tied with Roger Federer for the third-most all time. 2019 Wolffkran Open winner Lukas Lacko of Slovakia and defending champion Marc-Andrea Huesler from Switzerland will also return to Ismaning.
World No. 125 Yannick Hanfmann leads a strong German contingent. The winner of the inaugural edition in 2017 will seek his seventh ATP Challenger crown. Oscar Otte, Mats Moraing, Maximilian Marterer, Daniel Masur and Yannick Maden are also part of the entry list.
The fifth edition of the Wolffkran will be held from October 24 to 31. The winner of the singles competition will earn €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points. After last year’s tournament took place behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers of the event are looking forward to welcome back spectators later this month. A capacity of 500 people are expected to attend the matches each day.
