ISMANING, October 27, 2021
The Wolffkran Open, one of only two ATP Challenger Tour tournaments held on carpet, is taking place this week for the fifth time at the Tennis Club Ismaning, located about seven kilometers northeast of Munich on the right high bank of the Isar River.
Three big names crashed out of the €44,820 indoor tournament in first-round action on Tuesday. Czech qualifier Jonas Forejtek knocked off World No. 71 and top seed Jordan Thompson of Australia 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. The 20-year-old from Pilsen, who captured the trophy of the 2019 US Open Junior Championships, won 53 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and 16 minutes.
Forejtek will next take on the winner of the all-German encounter between Mats Moraing and Yannick Maden.
In an all-lefty affair, home favourite Maximilian Marterer defeated No. 2 seed Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic 7-6(8), 6-4. The 26-year-old from Nuremberg struck nine aces and won 82 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in one hour and 31 minutes.
“I continued my uncompromising, active game without letting my opponent play. This was key today,” said Marterer. “I grew up on carpet and up to the age of 16, 17, I always played on this surface during the winter season. That’s why I know exactly how to move and play. In Eckental I won a Challenger tournament on carpet, of course these matches help me a lot.”
Rosenkranz outlasts Huesler
The World No. 204 will next face his compatriot Mats Rosenkranz, who came back from set down to upset defending champion Marc-Andrea Huesler from Switzerland 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(0).
The 23-year-old wild card entry from Essen withstood 24 aces, broke Huesler’s serve three times and won seven points more to advance after one hour and 55 minutes.
“In the first set I could hardly do anything against his serve and lost the tie-break. After that I hit my returns better and better and was the much better player in the second set. The third set was up and down and every game was fiercely contested. So I’m very happy to win the match,” Rosenkranz said. “I achieved my best results in the last two Challenger tournaments and won some close matches, so I’m very confident.”
