ISMANING, October 29, 2021

Three German players will headline Friday’s quarterfinals action at the €44,820 Wolffkran Open in Ismaning. Home favourites Maximilian Marterer, Oscar Otte and Matthias Bachinger continued their fine run of form at the ATP Challenger 80 carpet tournament in the second round on Thursday.

Otte defeated his compatriot and qualifier Julian Lenz 6-3, 6-4. The No. 5 seed saved both break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own break-point chances to advance after one hour and nine minutes.

“It was another difficult match today because Julian and I get on very well off the court,” said Otte. “There are almost no one-way-traffic matches on carpet anyway. So I’m happy that I could to implement what I set out to do before the match so well. With the two victories here, I can go into the next match with even more confidence.”

The World No. 135 from Cologne will next take on Maximilian Marterer. The lefty from Nuremberg beat German wild card entry Mats Rosenkranz 6-3, 7-6(3). Marterer, who captured the Eckental Challenger title on carpet four years ago, won 56 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 18 minutes.

Another player feeling comfortable on this fast surface is Maxime Cressy. The No. 7 seed from the United States reached the final in Ismaning 2019 advanced to the stage of the last eight with a hard-fought 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 win over Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen after two hours and 18 minutes. Cressy will oppose Kacper Zuk from Poland.

In the top half of the draw, Czech rising star Jonas Forejtek backed up his first-round win over top seed Jordan Thompson with a 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-1 victory against Germany’s Yannick Maden. The 20-year-old qualifier will next challenge No. 8 seed Quentin Halys of France, who outlasted Belgian veteran Ruben Bemelmans 7-6(8), 6-7(5), 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.

Bachinger, who edged out Tim van Rijthoven from the Netherlands in three sets on Wednesday, will play former Ismaning champion Lukas Lacko of Slovakia.
