“The level of Nicolas surprised me a lot, especially in the second set. That makes me even happier because I really had to fight. At no time I did complain or lost my concentration. If I had, I would not have won,” said Bagnis.
The 31-year-old from Buenos Aires, who lifted his 14th Challenger trophy at the Salzburg Open in Anif, Austria in July, will next take on his compatriot Tomas Etcheverry. The No. 8 seed also had to go the distance to outlast Spanish lucky loser Nicolas Alvarez Varona 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) after two hours and 48 minutes.
In other action, No. 6 seed Thiago Seyboth Wild from Brazil defeated Colombian qualifier Alejandro Gonzalez 7-6(2), 6-0. The 21-year-old Brazilian capitalized on four of his 12 break-point opportunities to advance after one hour and 37 minutes.
Up next for Seyboth Wild will be Argentine Nicolas Kicker, who edged past Brazilian qualifier Daniel Dutra da Silva 7-6(5), 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 44 minutes.
