MONTEVIDEO/STARNBERG, November 11, 2021
The year-end South American swing on the ATP Challenger Tour continues this week with the Uruguay Open, hosted by the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo.
The top two seeds of the $52,080 clay-court event booked their spots in the second round on Monday. No. 1 seed Federico Coria of Argentina fought past his compatriot Andrea Collarini 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 after two hours and 39 minutes. The World No. 70 will next take on Brazilian Matheu Pucinelli de Almeida.
Second-seeded Spaniard Jaume Munar beat Facundo Mena of Argentina 6-1, 6-2. The World No. 89 will next play Argentine Pedro Cachin.
Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis, the tournament’s No. 3, opened his title bid with a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Argentine qualifier Gonzalo Villanueva on Tuesday. The 31-year-old from Buenos Aires, who captured his 14th ATP Challenger crown at the Salzburg Open in Austria in July, converted three of his 10 break-point chances to succeed after two hours of play. Up next for Bagnis will qualifier Francisco Comesana of Argentina.
No. 4 seed Thiago Monteiro rallied from a set down to overcome Renzo Olivo of Argentina 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(4) after two hours and 50 minutes and will oppose Argentine Juan Pablo Ficovich in the second round.
