The quarterfinals of the Uruguay Open are set. Facundo Bagnis, No. 3 seed of the $52,080 ATP Challenger 80 clay-court tournament hosted by the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo, defeated fellow Argentine Francisco Comesana 6-4, 7-5 on Cancha Central on Thursday.
Bagnis, who is seeking his second title of the season following his triumph at the Salzburg Open in Anif, broke the qualifier’s serve five times to seal victory in one hour and 54 minutes. Up next for the World No. 78 will be Hugo Dellien. The No. 7 seed of Bolivia fought past Timofey Skatov from Kazakhstan 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 after two hours and 45 minutes.
On Cancha 1, Thiago Monteiro remained untroubled during his 6-1, 6-2 win over Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina. The fourth-seeded Brazilian capitalized on five of his 11 break-point chances and won 57 per cent of the total points played to advance after one hour and 28 minutes. Monteiro will next take on Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero, who beat his compatriot Hernan Casanova 6-4, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 13 minutes.
Home favourites advance in doubles
Two Uruguayans have reached the stage of the final four teams in doubles. Martin Cuevas and his Argentine partner Francisco Cerundolo rallied past the all-Argentine combination of Andrea Collarini and Guillermo Duran 1-6, 6-2, 12-10. Home favourite Ignacio Carou and his Italian teammate Luciano Darderi edged out Francisco Comesana and Mariano Navone of Argentina 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.
