Seven years after finishing runner-up to home favourite Pablo Cuevas at the Uruguay Open, Hugo Dellien has returned to the final of the $52,080 ATP Challenger Tour 80 clay-court event.
The World No. 130 from Bolivia knocked out top seed Federico Coria of Argentina 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) on Saturday evening at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo. Dellien won four points less than his opponent but was wide awake in the important moments of the tie-breaks to secure victory in three hours and 15 minutes.
The seventh seed will face Juan Ignacio Londero in the championship match. The 28-year-old Argentine upset No. 2 seed Jaume Munar of Spain 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Londero converted four of his 11 break-point opportunities to prevail after two hours and four minutes.
Dellien is bidding for his seventh ATP Challenger crown, his second of the season following his triumph at the Dove Men & Care Legion Sudamericana Lima in Peru in early October. World No. 159 Londero could clinch his third Challenger title in addition to his tour-level title, won at the 2019 Cordoba Open.
Dellien and Londero will meet for the 10th time with the Argentine leading their head-to-head series 7-3.
Brazilians triumph in doubles
In other action, Rafael Matos and Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves claimed the doubles title. The Brazilian tandem defeated Ignacio Carou of Uruguay and Italian teenager Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and eight minutes.
Matos and Meligeni Rodrigues Alves split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
