Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the 11th edition of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis on a rain-affected Thursday in Campinas, Brazil.
In the only second-round match played, the 22-year-old Argentine emerged victorious from the battle of the qualifiers with Spaniard Nicolas Alvarez Varona, winning 7-6(7), 6-7(5), 7-5.
On Quadra Central Joao Lima at the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas tennis complex, Rodriguez Taverna capitalized on four of his 12 break-point opportunities and won six points more than his opponent to prevail after three hours and 26 minutes.
Currently ranked on a career-high World No. 336, Rodriguez Taverna has reached the stage of the final eight on the ATP Challenger Tour for the second time after last week’s run at the Uruguay Open. The Buenos Aires native awaits the winner of the encounter between his compatriot and No. 7 seed Sebastian Baez and Nicolas Alvarez from Peru.

In Friday’s remaining two second-round matches, No. 8 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina will face Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil, and local wild card entry Gustavo Heide will take on World No. 89 and third-seeded Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
In his first ATP Challenger Tour event, 19-year-old Heide will bid for the biggest victory of his career, facing a Top 100 player for the first time. The winners in the Round of 16 will return to the court in the afternoon for the quarterfinal matches.
