BRASILIA/STARNBERG, November 25, 2021
Federico Coria of Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Aberto Da Republica. The top seed of the $52,080 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament, being held at Iate Clube de Brasilia, defeated Brazilian wild card entry Wilson Leite 6-4, 7-6(5) on Wednesday afternoon.
The World No. 69 from Buenos Aires struck nine aces and won 67 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 56 minutes.
Up next for Coria will be his compatriot Juan Ignacio Londero. The eighth seed edged past Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil 6-4, 7-6(6). Londero saved all three break points he faced and capitalized on one of his two own break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 45 minutes.
In the bottom half of the draw, Nicolas Kicker emerged victorious from the all-Argentine affair with Juan Pablo Ficovich, winning 7-6(5), 7-6(6). The 29-year-old from Merlo outpointed his rival 91-83 after two hours and 18 minutes. Kicker will next play fellow Argentine Pedro Cachin, who rallied from a set down to outlast Brazilian Gilbert Klier Junior 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). The encounter lasted two hours and 29 minutes.
Seyboth Wild starts home campaign
Thiago Seyboth Wild remains the last Brazilian left in the singles draw. The No. 7 seed opened his home campaign with a 7-6(1), 6-3 first-round win over Facundo Diaz Acosta from Argentina. The match was suspended on Tuesday due to rain and resumed Wednesday after two hours and 10 minutes of play.
“I didn’t start the match very well yesterday, but today I’ve improved my level and was mentally and physically strong,” said Seyboth Wild, who will next face Nicolas Alvarez Varona of Spain.
“For sure, it will be another tough match. We both have already won one match and got more rhythm. Now I’m going to prepare myself to play well tomorrow,” Seyboth Wild added.
