SAO PAULO/STARNBERG, December 3, 2021
World No. 349 Facundo Diaz Acosta from Argentina avenged last week’s loss to No. 3 seed Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil and reached his second ATP Challenger quarterfinal on Thursday at the Dove Men & Care Challenger Sao Paulo.
Diaz Acosta, who lost Seyboth Wild in the opening round of the Aberto Da Republica in Brasilia, prevailed 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 26 minutes. The 20-year-old Buenos Aires native converted four of his eight break-point chances to secure victory. Diaz Acosta will next take on Italian qualifier Luciano Darderi, who eased past Nicolas Alvarez Varona of Spain 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 18 minutes.
Heide reaches first Challenger quarterfinal
Teenager Gustavo Heide emerged victorious from the all-Brazilian affair with qualifier Igor Marcondes, rallying 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The 19-year-old wild card entry sent down six aces and won 80 per cent of his first-service points to advance to stage of the final eight at Challenger level for the first time after two hours and 10 minutes.
“I knew it would be a very tough duel with Igor, who plays very well. I managed to turn the match around after losing the first set and I’m very happy to reach the quarterfinals of a Challenger for the first time. I am looking forward to tomorrow and hope to reach the semis,” said Heide.
Up next for Sao Paulo native Heide will be Juan Pablo Ficovich, who beat fellow Argentine and No. 8 seed Pedro Cachin 7-5, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 22 minutes.
