World No. 524 Igor Marcondes has reached the quarterfinal of an ATP Challenger Tour event for the first time. The 24-year-old qualifier from Brazil defeated his compatriot Orlando Luz 6-1, 6-4 in Wednesday’s second round match at the $52,080 Dove Men & Care – La Legión Florianopolis.
Marcondes, who is still seeking his first pro title in singles, converted four of his eight break points to seal victory in one hour and 20 minutes.
The lefty from Caraguatatuba will next take on the clay-court tournament’s top seed Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay, who fought past Argentine alternate Matias Zukas 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4 after almost three hours of play.
“It’s going to be another tough match. It’s about trying to be relaxed on the court, keeping my head up and enjoying my first quarterfinal,” Marcondes said.
In the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Hugo Dellien eased past Hernan Casanova from Argentina 6-0, 6-3. The World No. 119 from Bolivia capitalized on five of his eight break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and eight minutes.
Up next for Dellien will be Facundo Juarez, who emerged victorious from the all-Argentine battle with Facundo Diaz Acosta, rallying 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. The encounter lasted two hours and 15 minutes.
