RIO DE JANEIRO/STARNBERG, December 14, 2021
Main draw action at the Rio de Janeiro Tennis Classic kicked off on Monday. Alongside the Maia Open in Northern Portugal, the $52,080 ATP Challenger Tour tournament in Brazil, being held on hard court at the Parque Olimpico do Rio de Janeiro, is one of two events taking place in the final week of the 2021 season.
Top seeded Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild opened his title bid with a comfortable straight-set win. The World No. 131 cruised past unranked local wild card entry Lorenzo Esqueci 6-2, 6-0 in only 48 minutes.
“It’s always good to play here in Rio, it was a good debut. Lorenzo is a talented boy who has been playing very well. I managed to impose my game, had a good rhythm and felt good on the court. I’ll prepare for the next match on Wednesday, trying to stay firm in the tournament,” Seyboth Wild said.
The 21-year-old Rio resident will next take on the winner of the all-Swiss affair between Johan Nikles and qualifier Lucas Castelnuovo.
No. 8 seed Kaichi Uchida of Japan defeated Gonzalo Villanueva of Argentina 6-3, 6-4 and will next play either Guilherme Clezar of Brazil or Argentine Genaro Alberto Oliveiri.
In the bottom half of the draw, Italian teenager Luca Darderi knocked out seventh-seeded Serbian Pedja Krstin 6-2, 7-6(6). The 19-year-old finalist from Sao Paulo two weeks ago fired 14 aces and won 83 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 33 minutes. Up next for Darderi will be Nicolas Alvarez Varona from Spain, who edged past Facundo Diaz Acosta from Argentina 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and two minutes.
