RIO DE JANEIRO/STARNBERG, December 17, 2021
Brazilian wild card entry Gabriel Decamps headlined Thursday’s second-round action at the Rio de Janeiro Tennis Classic by reaching the quarterfinals on the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time. The 22-year-old from Sao Paulo rallied past Alejandro Gomez from Colombia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Decamps withstood 11 aces and broke his rival’s serve four times to secure victory in one hour and 35 minutes. The World No. 654 started his career on the Pro Circuit in July, when he earned his first ATP Ranking point. Decamps, who lives in Cannes, France, played 12 ITF World Tennis Tour events and won 45 of his 56 matches before competing in the Rio de Janeiro Tennis Classic. He beat Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia in the first round of the $52,080 hard-court tournament.
“I had a nervous start into the match. I felt a little pressure. But then I managed to adapt better, found my rhythm and played my game,” said Decamps, who will next take on compatriot Daniel Dutra da Silva. The 33-year-old lefty benefited from the retirement of Brazilian qualifier Rafael Matos.
The pair will be joined by another home favourite in the stage of the final eight, as Mateus Alves battled past Bogdan Bobrov of Russia 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3 after almost three hours.
The 20-year-old from Sao Jose do Rio Preto will next face No. 2 seed Nicolas Kicker. The World No. 233 from Argentina defeated last week’s first-time ATP Challenger Tour champion Igor Marcondes of Brazil 6-4, 6-1. The encounter lasted one hour and 24 minutes.
