Tennis Australia Press Release, January 7, 2022
Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray will play the Sydney Tennis Classic at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre from 10 to 15 January after being awarded a singles wildcard.
It will be the first time the former world No.1 has competed in the Harbour City.
“I’m looking forward to playing in Sydney for the first time and continuing my preparation for the Australian Open,” Murray said.
“I’ve heard great things about Sydney, it’s a pretty cool city.”
Murray will join the likes of Aslan Karatsev, fellow Brit Daniel Evans, David Goffin and Australians Alexei Popyrin and wildcard recipients Jordan Thompson and Nick Kyrgios in the men’s singles draw.
The women’s singles draw will feature 19 of the world’s top 30 including world No.1 Ash Barty, world No.3 Garbine Muguruza, world No.5 Barbora Krejcikova, former world No.1 Simona Halep, Roland Garros 2020 champion Iga Swiatek, Australian Open 2020 champion Sofia Kenin, reigning US Open women’s champion Emma Raducanu and finalist Leylah Fernandez. Australians Ajla Tomljanovic and Astra Sharma have been awarded singles wildcards.
The Sydney Tennis Classic is a new, one-off WTA 500 and ATP 250 tournament that will immediately follow the ATP Cup.
The draw will be conducted on Saturday 8 January at 4.30pm.
Qualifying begins on Sunday 9 January before the main draw on Monday 10 January.
Tickets to the Sydney Tennis Classic are on sale here.
Tickets start at $39 for adults, $29 for concessions and children 14 years of age and under are free.
Fans can sit in the shade at Ken Rosewall Arena after its new canopy roof was introduced in late 2019.
