Couacaud, Escobedo To Play Bendigo International Final

Frenchman Enzo Couacaud and Ernesto Escobedo from the United States will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Bendigo International. Couacaud, No. 10 seed of the $58,320 ATP Challenger Tour hard-court tournament being held at the venue of the Bendigo Tennis Association in Victoria, Australia, fought past Italian Franco Agamenone 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-4 on Saturday.

The World No. 179 capitalized on four of his five break-point chances and won 54 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in two hours and 18 minutes.

Later in the day, Escobedo defeated fifth favourite Salvatore Caruso from Italy 6-3, 6-1. The No. 8 seed sent down four aces and won 82 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 20 minutes.

Couacaud is bidding for his third ATP Challenger title following his triumphs on home soil in Cassis 2018 and in Gran Canaria, Spain last year. Escobedo could lift his fourth career trophy, his first since 2019 Granby, Canada.

Couacaud and Esbobedo will meet for the third time. The pair’s head-to-head record is tied at 1-1.

Bemelmans/Masur claim doubles title

In other action, Belgian veteran Ruben Bemelmans and Daniel Masur from Germany captured the doubles title. The top seeds defeated the tournament’s No. 2 seeds Enzo Couacaud and Blaz Rola of Slovenia 7-6(2), 6-4. The championship match lasted one hour and 17 minutes.

By winning their fourth team title on the Challenger Tour, Bemelmans and Masur split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
