World No. 226 Alexandre Muller has reached the second round of the Open Quimper Bretagne Occidentale. The French qualifier upset his compatriot and No. 2 seed of the €45,730 ATP Challenger hard-court tournament, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday evening.

Muller withstood five aces from the five-time Grand Slam doubles champion and capitalized on five of his nine break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 20 minutes. The 24-year-old Poissy native, a winner of seven titles on the ITF Pro Circuit, will next take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In his first match since July last year, the former World No. 5 recorded a comeback win against Marc-Andrea Huesler on Monday.

In other action, Kacper Zuk outlasted fourth-seeded French veteran Gilles Simon 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3. The World No. 171 from Poland won 71 per cent of his first-service points and broke serve two times to prevail after two hours and 39 minutes. Zuk will next play either Dutch qualifier Tim van Rijthoven or Frenchman Antoine Hoang.

No. 5 seed Vasek Pospisil booked his spot in the second round following a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Mathias Bourgue from France and will oppose Lukas Lacko from Slovakia, who beat Mats Moraing of Germany 6-3, 7-5.

Sixth favourite Joao Sousa of Portugal defeated Italian Franco Agamenone 6-3, 6-3 and will next take on Frenchman Constant Lestienne, who benefited from the retirement of lucky loser Andrea Arnaboldi from Italy.
