QUIMPER/STARNBERG, January 28, 2022
The qualifiers of the Open Quimper Bretagne Occidentale ATP Challenger 80 tournament dominated Thursday’s second-round action in northwestern France. Andrey Kuznetsov defeated Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-6(5), 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the €45,730 hard-court event.
The 30-year-old Russian converted six of his nine break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 29 minutes. Kuznetsov, an eight-time ATP Challenger Tour champion and former Top 40 player, will next take on Frenchman Gregoire Barrere.
Kuznetsov will be joined in the stage of the final eight by fellow qualifiers Tim van Rijthoven from the Netherlands, Hiroki Moriya of Japan and Frenchman Alexandre Muller. Van Rijthoven edged out Kacper Zuk of Poland 7-5, 6-4 and will next play fifth-seeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil. Moriya fought past Belgian veteran Ruben Bemelmans 7-5, 6-1, facing Muller next.
The quarterfinals line-up is led by World No. 118 and third favourite Dennis Novak from Austria, who will oppose No. 6 seed Joao Sousa from Portugal.
