Nino Serdarusic has booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Regione Abruzzo Aterno Gas & Power Cup II. The World No. 219 from Croatia backed up his first-round win over top seed Jiri Vesey with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5 victory over 19-year-old local wild card entry Flavio Cobolli at the Tennis Club Roseto on Wednesday.

Serdarusic, who entered the main draw as an alternate, struck five aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to advance after two hours and 51 minutes.

“It was very difficult match for me,” said Serdarusic and added that he was not that happy with his serve and couldn’t find his rhythm but was glad to have secured an important victory.

The 25-year-old Zagreb native will next take on Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan, who battled past Portuguese veteran Gastao Elias 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 in two hours and 29 minutes.

Carlos Taberner, who lifted the trophy here in Central Italy last week, emerged victorious from the all-Spanish affair with qualifier Carlos Gimeno Valero, winning 7-6(3), 6-3. The No. 3 seed of the €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament capitalized on five of his 14 break-point opportunities to prevail after almost two hours of play.

Up next for Taberner will be Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei. The No. 8 seed beat Franco Agamenone of Italy 6-4, 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 31 minutes.
