Reigning Australian Open doubles finalists Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell highlight the 14 doubles teams on the initial entry list for the 2022 Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, an ATP 250 tournament taking place April 2-10 at River Oaks Country Club.The U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, which returns to River Oaks for the first time since 2019, will also feature four all-American doubles teams. The U.S. duos include Sam Querrey, the 2012 River Oaks doubles champion, and partner Steve Johnson, a two-time singles champion. Former NCAA doubles champion Mackenzie McDonald teams with 2020 French Open doubles quarterfinalist Tommy Paul while 2018 River Oaks doubles finalist Frances Tiafoe unites with four-time ATP Tour titleholder Nicholas Monroe. Marcos Giron, one of five players in both the singles and doubles main draws at River Oaks, will compete with former NCAA doubles champion Hunter Reese. Defending River Oaks doubles champion Santiago Gonzalez will go on a quest for a repeat run with 27-time ATP Tour titleholder Lukasz Kubot. “We are thrilled to reveal our 2022 doubles field,” Tournament Director Bronwyn Greer said. “With doubles being popular to play, our fans will enjoy the competition of former River Oaks champions, NCAA doubles winners and the rest of the great talent in the field.”Below are the initial entries for the 2022 doubles draw.Sadio Doumbia (France) + Fabien Reboul (France): Have captured two ATP Challenger Tour titles together in 2022. Matthew Ebden (Australia) + Max Purcell (Australia): Reigning Australian Open finalists and 2021 US Open quarterfinalists. Daniel Elahi Galan (Colombia) + Carlos Taberner (Spain): Taberner has one ATP Challenger Tour doubles title while Galan owns a pair of ITF doubles titles. Marcos Giron (USA) + Hunter Reese (USA): Giron was a semifinalist in Delray Beach with Hach Verdugo and Reese won the 2014 NCAA doubles championship at the University of TennesseeSantiago Gonzalez (Mexico) + Lukasz Kubot (Poland): Gonzalez is the defending US Clay doubles champion, winning with Aisam-Ul-Haq-Qureshi in 2019. Kubot owns 27 career doubles titles. Andre Goransson (Sweden) + Nathaniel Lammons (USA): Were finalists together in Santiago earlier this year. Hans Hach Verdugo (Mexico) + Austin Krajicek (USA): Hach Verdugo won his first ATP Tour doubles title last season. Krajicek, a former NCAA doubles champion at Texas A&M University, is an Olympian who owns four titles and was a 2019 River Oaks semifinalist. Diego Hidalgo (Ecuador) + Alejandro Tabilo (Chile): Hidalgo is a three-time ATP Challenger Tour winner in 2022 and Tabilo is one of five players playing in the singles and doubles main draws at River Oaks. Treat Huey (Philippines) + Denis Kudla (USA): Recently won the ATP Challenger Tour title together in Phoenix earlier this month. Steve Johnson (USA) + Sam Querrey (USA): Won first doubles title together on clay in Geneva and have reached a pair of finals. Querrey was the 2012 River Oaks doubles champion with James Blake. Mackenzie McDonald (USA) + Tommy Paul (USA): McDonald won the 2016 NCAA doubles title at UCLA while Paul was a 2020 French Open quarterfinalist with Nicholas Monroe. Nicholas Monroe (USA) + Frances Tiafoe (USA): Monroe owns four ATP Tour doubles titles while Tiafoe was a 2018 River Oaks finalist with Dustin Brown. Ivan Sabanov (Serbia) + Matej Sabanov (Serbia): Twin brothers who won a title together last season. Luke Saville (Australia) + John-Patrick Smith (Australia): Reached first doubles final together earlier this year in Pune. Two additional duos will be awarded wild cards prior to the tournament to bring the doubles draw size to 16 teams. The final takes place on Saturday, April 9. As the only clay court tournament in North America on the ATP Tour, the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship starts Saturday, April 2 with the singles qualifying tournament. Main draw action for both singles and doubles begin Monday, April 4, with the singles final occurring on Sunday, April 10. Previously announced singles players in the field are highlighted by current World No. 8 Casper Ruud, former champions Cristian Garin (2019) and John Isner (2013), six-time ATP Tour titleholder Nick Kyrgios along with top-ranked American Taylor Fritz. Fritz defeated 21-time Major champion Rafael Nadal to capture his first Masters 1000 title in his hometown tournament in Indian Wells, California on Sunday.
